Digital lifeboat is a life saver

By

Ever have your external harddrive crash.....

Have you ever had photos or files on your computer hard drive crash, it's such a heart wrenching experience, believe me I know first hand. I actually thought that by having my photos saved onto an external hard drive they would be safe and I wouldn't have to worry - well that was a big mistake. I had that happen a few months ago, these were all my edited and categorized high resolution photos. All of a sudden one day when I was trying to save one to the external drive, I got this awefull message that said that if I saved it, everything in the drive would be lost......what do you do next? Well I didn't know what to do, but I didn't save that particular photo and tried to just close it out, but when I tried to find my data on the drive it was all gone. I just felt this very sick feeling in my stomach.

Fortunately, I have all these photos on DVD's and some are actually online in my art gallery so not all is lost. But the re-editing and re-categorizing I will have to do will take months of my time. It was truly a blessing to have these on DVD's, but it will be a painstaking process to locate certain ones when I need them, since I only have about a hundred DVD's here - no biggy.

My main reason for this hub is to hopefully educate and give you some options on where to get backup if you do not already have that service. I realize and have included some other hubs with even more information for you as well. But, I found this very cool website called Digital Lifeboat. What drew me to the website was the fact that it was free of course, but this service is so worth paying for if you don't like Digital Lifeboat. For now free is good and I thought I would check it out. Well it turns out that for now it's free, but in the future it will cost you to join and have them back up your files and photos online.

Thank goodness I found this website, it's very easy to register and then they will basically backup your entire computer on to their server. I had reservations regarding security issues so I gave it a great deal of thought, then I realized that if someone wanted to hack into my info they could do that now. The cool part is that if you join now, then when they do begin to charge you will be grandfathered in and won't have to pay - another cool thing about digital lifeboat.

It takes a little while to get all the information backed up and they keep you posted as to the percentage of progress by email. Then of course when it's completed every time you save anything to your hard drive it gets saved onto their server automatically. Then if you are to have another crash - heaven forbid, you will be able to retrieve the files from their server.

See ya!

More places to go online for storage......

There are some other online resources for file backup lik:

  • Mozy
  • Carbonite
  • 4shared
  • adrive
  • fileden

So be sure to check them out too. Just remember to not take it for granted, even an external hard drive can crash as mine did. Hope this was helpful and happy hubbing y'all.

I never thought of these issues either. I think we get too complacent with our computers these days and should think of that one 'what if' moment, lol. Great information and thanks for sharing. :)

I agree that this is a great option, however, when speaking about critical information you need, i.e. medical, financial, etc, I would keep a local and an offsite copy.

thanks for the info I will keep that in mind....

To Dame Scribe, I this is true, that "what if" moment was not fun at all....thanks for stopping in and your comments.

I have crashed two hard-drives,,, one without any recovery, the other I took to Staples and they saved my pictures....I needed my desktop saved, but they did the best they could..... I have an external hard-drive, but haven't gotten in the habit of saving everything to it yet. I am considering cloud storage

Hi LeslieAdrienne, so sorry to hear about all the crashes and glad you were able to save your pictures. I actually sent my external drive to my nephew who is microsoft certified and he did his best but couldn't retrieve any of them. I haven't heard of cloud storage - thanks for stopping in.

I am using Digital Lifeboat and think it is good so far. Just one thing I have noticed is that it changes some of my settings and my computer no longer goes to sleep.

Hi Linda, thanks for letting me know about that. Mine hasn't done that so far, I would contact them and see if that is something that can be changed somehow. Have a great day!
